CHAPTER

Sleeping Sickness

In the late 18 hundreds, european colonialism was in full swing. A lot of east and west frica had been sort of partitioned off. But much of central africa was still viewed as being up for grabs. And so i mention leopold and the congo free state in particular because this is where that deadly epidemic occurred. It provides such a clear example of how sleeping sickness was read not because the european self proclaimed saviours made peaceful movement possible,. but because the brutality and violence that were perpetrated by these colonial powersit drove the disease to be more widespread and prevalent.
