By the 1700s, everybody had a dramatur. Aydrometer. Anybody who was buying ramen, any quantity whatsoever. You don't really want to use fire near gunpowder anywhere on board a ship unless you're pointing it at the enemy. I've got this amazing book. It's the account of a captain who off the coast of Africa in like 1720 gets captured by pirates. They run out of rum and they send somebody with a torch down to the hold of the ship to get more rum. And he opens the barrel and of course the vapor in the rum explodes. There's a huge fire and all the pirates are too drunk to put it out. So
