The Importance of Internment Camps
In 1914, the British government passed the Aliens Restrictions Act. It allowed them to intern anyone who they suspected of espionage or believe to otherwise be a threat to national security. Pilates was sent to knockalow internment camp on the Isle of Man. Knockalow alone housed 23,000 prisoners of war and 3000 guards between 1914 and 1919.
