The Expectation Effect
The expectation effect is a phenomenon where we create our own self-fulfilling prophecies. When you enter a room, your brain first builds a simulation of what it thinks is in the room based on past experience before overlaying it with data from the retina. Your mood and your attitudes are going to shape those simulations that you're building. We can see this in things like depression and anxiety - people ruminating about their worries actually changes their perception of the world around them.
