The Importance of Ali's Accession to the Caliphate
Ali's final accession to the caliphate is in fact not uncontested. They're an un-numerous warring groups really within the early Muslim community who have very different ideas about what should happen. Although Ali didn't actively support the rebels against Uthman, to some extent they were seen as being associated with him. So there was a group, particularly the clan of Uthman himself, the Banu Umayyah, who felt that a revenge should be taken for the death ofUthman.
