The Duty of the Sheriff
The sheriff remained as the main specialized law enforcement official in the english speaking world for almost a thousand years. sheriffs were t usually expected to patrol rit they didn't go around, you know, pacing up and down the street, or riding around on a horse on the roads,. They were expected to be on call if crime or violence happened. And when an alarm was raised, they should respond with force and pursue and arrest offenders.
