By the time jewish emancipation begins to reach the russian empire, young jews have had it with what they saw as the stagnant traditions and social life. And so his opportuni s began to open up to them. They flooded the secular schools and universities. They were throwing off yiddish, the language of exile, and learning russian. Instead of study groups poring over pedantic commentary on the tora, they were applying that same tradition of deep reading and discussion to scientific ideas and socialist and democratic political theory. A huge generational gap starts to open up between the traditional parents and the enthusiastic young adoptors of Russian nationalism.
