John Pershing and the War of 1873

Pershing's father loses all but their home in the panic of 1873. He saves up over the years by working as a field hand, a janitor, and eventually, as a teacher for black students. In 1895 he takes command of the famed all-black Buffalo Soldiers' 10th Cavalry. Jack was ahead of his time among Army officers that show some respect for indigenous peoples.
