The Use of Cognitive Science in Data Visualization
A lot of data visualization research is focused on low level perception like how well can we estimate area sizes or how good our colors are to encode in types of information. cognitive science gives researchers a understanding of some of the underlying processes that are at work which can help you develop new visualizations and iterate more quickly through your design process. It's a nice way of taking some usability questions in visualization and pulling some science from different fields to give you a foundation so you don't have to restudy those topics that have been labored over for a hundred years really.
