Prior to the 1980s people with mental illnesses were often sent simply to rural areas, isolated on the outskirts of society or in the outskirts of family. Other families could afford to do more in this regard traditionally using traditional Chinese medicine in the privacy of their own homes If they had large enough compounds and extra staff to want to take care of individuals.
