Social media has been shown to promote negative experiences like that feeling of inadequacy about your life and appearances because of upward social comparison. A study by Primark found a link between the use of multiple social media platforms and increased depression and anxiety symptoms in young people aged 19 to 32. The 24-7 circulation of easily viewable manipulated images promotes and entrenches those unrealistic expectations of how you should look and how you should behave. And when these expectations we have based on what we see on social media, when they're not met, the impact on self-esteem is so damaging.
