Is There a Myth of the Self Made Man?
I had these large ideas that had to get, as you say, enacted. How to do that really is to some extent, qualify or let the reader know that we're going to go broad here. I mean, he did represent to me these excesses and these failings of men of my father's generation. But at the same time, while that critique had to be there,. i had to remind myself that this was a man, and he was a failing for all these different reasons. And so sort of the broadest perspective on this one particular person's life that it could be broad.
