The Rise of the Tea Grinder in Japan

Tea was important for two reasons. First, the drink had a pre existing connection with buddhism as religion. Second, buddhist institutions were often involved in the import of chinese goods and culture into japan. Monks travelled to and from the mainland fairly consistently to study at chinese temples. All monks had to know chinese to read the sutras. So it was not unheard of for temples to finance trade expeditions.
