The Story of a Steamboat Fire on Long Island

The excursion steamboat had departed its third street pier that morning loaded with passengers, mostly women and children. But as the overcrowded steamship entered the hell gate, a fire started in the lower lamp room and quickly spread. It was later revealed that the boats were wired to the ship and unable to be freed. The captain had purposely beached the ship on to north brother island in order to give the passengers a chance to escape.
