How Did the Slave Say That?

In some instances, both in egypt and in italy, there were some instances where contracts of sale were formulated. One element was that the captive herself or himself, had to sign off and acknowledge the they were a slave - which seemed very bizarre to me. So how did that protect the buyers interests, to have this line where the slaves themselves have to say, yes, i axe this sale rigt? It shows how it's all very multi factor as well. You can see how italian merchants saw russians as somehow more foreign or more barbaric than enslaving a greek.
