Saffic is a term far older and more widespread than its counterpart, lesbian. The use of the term Saphic in describing erotic love between women began to rise in prominence during the 15th century when there was a renewed interest in Ovid's treatise. In 18th century London, the terms Saphist and Tommy were used as the high and low cultural terms for women with homoerotic interests.
