The Story of Charles Bennett's Violin
In the 1970s, Charles Bennett bought a violin at a flea market for $80. He and his PhD advisor tried to figure out if it was authentic or not. They used carbon dating but that method requires destroying the instrument. So they asked whether they could use their particle accelerator instead. That experiment started what we now call accelerated mass spectrometry.
