Intelligent Tutoring Systems - Is There a Difference?

There's a long history of people trying to solve that particular problem, going back almost five decades for me. The most promising kind of sub field or sub approach, was called intelligent tutoring systems. I would say that none of these systems has been wildly successful, and the field as a whole has not been wildly successful. So i'm curious about systems that bothm help you mechanically, but also, in kind of the same system, identify your weaknesses and where you can improve.
