Her restaurant, Brown Sugar Kitchen, became a focal point of the Oakland community during its almost 15 year tenure, and now, she has a gorgeous new cookbook out: California Soul, which traces the roots of California soul food from the Western Migration to the present day through recipes, storytelling, and profiles of local chefs and makers.
