The History of the China Wall
When he was 15 years old, Bauer lied about his age and enlisted in the Canadian Army during World War II. From 1940 to 1943, he was stationed in England as a gunner with the second Canadian division. His nickname was the China Wall, which was given him by a Cleveland sports writer during his minor league hockey career. He kept a little black book on his NHL opponents that he would study before games. The first goalie to regularly add the poke check to his arsenal.
