Elizabeth Gilbert could have written a prologue or decided to undertake another literary project that would rectify some of the heart that she'd done. There's also an identity politics vein to this though isn't there Jamie in that you know we're in a culture now where people find it easier to write a novel set in Africa if they have ethnic African origins. People find it more defensible to write a character with a gay protagonist if they themselves are gay and I just feel like it was almost an easy out.
