Necrotizing fasciitis is a term for severe soft tissue infection of the subcontaneous skin and muscle fascia. It can affect any part of the body, but it most commonly occurs in the extremities and the perineum or genitalia. The speed of the disease progression coupled with the variety of presentations that patients can have makes it very difficult to diagnose.
