Napoleon and the Cannons

Napoleon sends out his cavalry and tells them to ride as fast as they can and bring the cannons into paris. Legend has it that napoleon says, as this mob is advancing toward his men, give them a whiff of grape shot. He later did say, quote, if you treat the mob with kindness, these creatures fancy themselves invulnerable. If you hang a few, they get tired of the game and become as submissive and humble as they ought to be.
