Cortes rose quickly within the social circles of the spanish colonies. By 15 18, cortez owned a sprawling hacienda in cuba and several gold mines. He'd achieved a level of success many of his contemporaries would have been perfectly content with. But then he met pedro de alvarado - an adventurer who had just returned from an expedition into the coastal jungles of the yucatan. For him, there was no such thing as too rich; for him, these little trinkets were just the tip of the iceberg.
