CHAPTER

Exploring CRISPR: The Power and Ethics of Gene Editing

This chapter explores the revolutionary gene editing technology CRISPR, detailing its natural origins and functionality. It also delves into the ethical implications of gene editing while incorporating a lighthearted discussion on palindromes.

How ironic is that? Yeah, I'm just telling you what I learned. So basically my infection can get an infection, which is crazy. Okay, so you said CRISPR is gene splicing. Tell us what that is exactly. Yeah,
Speaker 1
it's gene splicing or gene editing. In short, while studying bacteria, these scientists discovered that bacteria have a part of their DNA called CRISPR, which stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. Palindromic? Like a palindrome? Like the word race car? I think so. And just as a total aside, my favorite palindrome is go hang a salami, I'm a lasagna hog. So palindromes are when it's the same, when it reads the same
Speaker 2
backwards and forwards. So race car is the same backwards and forwards. And apparently so is go hang a salami, I'm a Lasagna Hog, which is, you gotta wonder how they figured that one out. That's almost as impressive as discovering the ability to edit genes while looking for something else. You
Speaker 1
talked about these very specific kind of nerds that celebrate mitochondrial Eve. I think palindromes are probably discovered by a different kind of very specific nerd. I think you might be right. Yeah, so this CRISPR stores a tiny piece of a virus's DNA, and the next time the virus comes back, this CRISPR snips out a piece of the DNA and destroys it. So these two scientists wondered, why can't we use that technique to cut out genes

that are unwanted and replace them with ones that are wanted? You know, it comes with absolutely no ethical dilemmas. Supporting the fine products and services that support this show. We'll be right back. This episode is sponsored in part by BetterHelp. What's your story for 2025? Is it going to be the year you make real changes or is it going to be another chapter of, eh, figure it out later? We've all been there, but seriously, the new year is not just about resolutions that fade. It's about rewiring the tough chapters and building something that actually lasts. Therapy for me personally has been huge. And for everybody I know who's into it. And by the way, I find out when I start talking about it, a lot of people are like, oh, yeah, I do therapy. You do therapy. It's like this weird secret, especially among guys. I don't get it. Come on, do it. It's good for you, for God's sake. Then again, so are vegetables and I don't really indulge. Anyway, I didn't mess with therapy for a long time. Therapy, though, not for when things just go sideways, although it can be a lifesaver then too. It's like having a GPS for life, helping you avoid dead ends, navigate the tricky stuff, figure out where you really want to go. And BetterHelp is good. They make therapy so accessible, it's almost impossible to make excuses. It's completely online. It's affordable. It connects you with over 30,000 licensed therapists. You can do sessions via video, phone, even text, which means you can literally be in sweatpants and still be working on yourself. And here's the best part. If your therapist is not the right fit, because not everyone's a match, I've dumped a few in my day, you can switch at no extra cost. Write your story with BetterHelp. Homes.com knows that when it comes to home shopping, it's never about the house or the condo. It's about the home. And what makes a home is more than just the house or the property. It's the location and neighborhood. So if you've got kids, it's also schools, nearby parks, transportation options. That's why Homes.com goes above and beyond to bring home shoppers the in-depth information they need to find the right home. And when I say in-depth, I'm talking deep. Each listing features comprehensive information about the neighborhood, complete with a video guide. They've also got details about local schools with test scores, state rankings, student-to ratio. They even have an agent directory with the sales history of each agent. So, when it comes to finding a home, not just a house, this is everything you need to know all in one place. Homes.com. We've done your homework. Thank you all for listening and for supporting us. All of the deals, discount codes, and ways to support the show are all in one searchable and clickable place. JordanHarbinger.com/deals. Now for the rest of Skeptical Sunday. This is fascinating because I always thought, oh, gene editing, it's like some machine that does a bunch of specific things. And I'm sure there's machinery involved. But really, this is a natural process. They're using a natural process to edit DNA, which is wild to me. OK, so they're cutting out genes that are unwanted, replacing
Speaker 1
them with genes that are wanted. And do you mean in humans? In anything. As I said, this is a huge leap forward. And as such, this technology comes with a huge ethical concerns.
