Liberalism and the Declaration of Independence
The theme of our panel was how liberal was the American founding and this is one of the contentious issues today among conservative academics, but also a lot of... At least some of their books have had a wider popular readership than you might expect from the typical academic book. And this is what I tried to address in my paper. They claim that conservatism and or Christianity or the Bible is one thing. And liberalism is something else. These things are fundamentally incompatible to the extent that they were ever combined. It was an uneasy sort of tension. But there is a very interesting story of liberalism, even though we can't deny any of it at all,. So I'll leave it there at the moment
