Watson: John Clay's accomplice, the short man with the Red Hair who interviewed Wilson for the job had Red Hair. And so he thought maybe we can come up with some story that connects the two of them that could be convincing. That last bit, Holmes is saying, it saved me from on-wee. "Long serrion, lo vcetu" as Gustav Flaubert wrote to George Sand.
