Why Is It Good for Software Engineers to Unionize?

I worked at a company and I discovered a serious security vulnerability that potentially exposed lots of user information. My suggestion to management was, okay, we need to obviously first fix the issue. And they were on board with that, which is great. But then I was like, and then we also need to inform our users and investigate the potential extent of the exploit. It's no longer just the boss being able to decide what direction things go in or what we have to work on. So it becomes about finding a solution that works for everyone.
