In religious and mythological traditions, the idea of the apocalypse is imbued with a lot of significance. It's often seen as the culmination of the moral order. And that means that nothing's at stake in our individual actions. In extinction, if we're believing there aren't any other intelligent agents in our kind of cosmic vicinity, it's this sense of an irreversible frustration of what we think of as a moral order. Its de frustration of that kind of upward force, that kind of esculater to betterness, which you just don't find in the apocalypse.
