While chatting with a friend, an Austrian activist named Peter Rainier, she heard something that absolutely shocked her: 50% of the world's refugees are Afghan. The Soviets launched a deliberate effort to depopulate rural Afghanistan. Five million Afghans had been forced to flee their homes and seek shelter across the border into Israel or Canada.
