Sherlock is sad the whole time and Irene is fake dead, which has been layered. He's right and wrong at the same time, because he's picking up on things. But if he wasn't sad about John, he would have been surprised that he didn't care. And I find it so fascinating that my craft misreads Sherlock so much in the scene.
