The author made some assumptions about the ages of her characters. "East of eden" was written for a boy who feels like he's a bad boy and can't do anything right, she says. The book gives him perspective on what it means to be an angry, cynical person with no friends or anyone else in his family. It also shows that you don't have to hurt someone just because your dad is a jerk.
