Most of these boards need power. If it has audio outputs or something like that, you can definitely connect there. But usually the power is brought in by the USB connection. These little microcontroller projects draw like 20, 30 milliamps - one tenth of what a phone will pull. So you can run these little projects off of normally junked USB power banks for hours.
