The crew of the alabama was just a bunch of guys picked up from the docks of europe, and a few reactionary europeans who wanted to be part of the cause. Sems describes an italian steward who he says was being bullied on another ship. The union had a good first year because there were a lot of american whalers around the azors islands,.
