Shostakovich's Careerist

As the music hits the word careerist, we are treated to perhaps the most tonal and banal music of the symphony yet. The mockery is clear here, and it becomes even more explicit as Shostakovich finishes off the obtuchenko's verse with this text and music. All those who strove towards the stratosphere, the doctors who died of cholera, they were following careers. They're forgotten those who hurled curses, but we remember the ones who were cursed. After a long orchestral interlude, we arrive at the last verse. Our bassoon conscience is always takes us to this cradle, the heart of the entire symphony.
