The seed behind The Overstory was an unexpected encounter you had with a redwood tree. All the characters in The Overstory have encounters and experiences with trees that greatly impact them, and lead them on life-changing journeys. By the time I moved to Northern California to teach at Stanford, I had sunk pretty deeply into that kind of Ethiopia that we human suffer That is characterized by the belief that we are pretty much the only interesting game in town.
