Barker's calculations had taken them well to the south of New Zealand. But according to Porter, there was growing discontent among the men. Barker made an effort to rise on the 30th of January but weather wasn't clear enough to reveal sun. To the relief of his crew, he announced they would alter their course sharply and head northeast. They were finally turning towards South America.
