In the 1960s, it was illegal to be gay in New York. Gay people flocked to cities where there were other gays and lesbians. Even during an era where being LGBT is illegal, queer people are finding themselves in cities because odds are someone's going to be there. So getting kicked out of your hometown can lead to one way bus tickets to New York or San Francisco.
