After school you initially wanted to study cosmology at university. What attracted you to cosmology? I think I used to lie bed at night and worried about what could be beyond the edge of the universe if there was an edge to the universe, what was the other side of it? And this was a time when there was a lot of interest in radio astronomy,. There'd been a new radio telescope built in Jodrell Bank in England - they were getting radio signals back from outer space. It was something to which I could apply mathematics, which was my main subject at school. So I decided that three years of laboratory experiments was not for me. Instead I became an economist.
