A combination of determined attacks by Carlist infantry and the general feeling of helplessness against air attacks was a demoralizing combination for the defenders. By April 5th the attack had pushed forward 15km on a front 20km wide. However, due to the terrain they were unable to widen this salient and the offensive began to stall. After this stall occurred on April 6th the Nationalist announced that they would be blockading the Republican ports on the coast with their available naval assets.
