Couples Counseling
Couples counselling is what we call contra indicated if there is abuse in the marriage. The reason is because triangulation will become part of the treatment. And it's very hard to trust me as a therapist, to tell what's going on for a while. If i'm assessing for safety and they do not sound safe together, i recommend individual counselling for both partners until they have had six months with zero incidences of any type of abuse. After six months of no abuse, i will then assess for readiness for couples therapy. Another myth is that if some one ever hurt me, i would leave immediately.
