CHAPTER

The Importance of Craft in the Modern World

I don't think craft as an idea or a concept could exist without mass production and industrialization. Its identity comes in the distinction it makes for itself as against industrialization and mass production. One of the fundamental reasons that people continue to go into handwork is to regain, to re-establish that connection between themselves and their lives with the materials they're working with. It really does go back to Marx's concepts of alienation or kinds of work that can perhaps bring you away from that sense of alienation.
