Going the Long Way

Canals are thought to have been dug so thousands of years ago. They existed right up until 767 CE, when the Abbasid Caliphate shut them down. This was a precursor to what would later go on to become the Suez Canal. But as the centuries passed through, plenty of people who aren't actually happy with this situation that I want to go the long way.
