Jefferson's Paratica War on Slavery
Jefferson was surrounded by a world where people were enslaved. He came out swinging against slavery, at least rhetorically, in the Declaration of Independence. At no point in Jefferson's life was it legally practical for him to abolish slavery. If he freed an enslaved person, one of his creditors could have seized that person and sold them off.
