The Multiple Genres of Revelation
Within the first five verses of the prologue of Revelation, John employs three different categories of composition and referring to his work. There is an epistolary element that helps us bring back revelation to its historical situatedness. The Old Testament role of a prophet was not simply to foretell the future, but to foretell God's law.
