CHAPTER

Contingency Is Not the Same as Relativivism

The symbolic order hinges here on an anatomical peculiarity on contingencies. Contingency means precisely that there is a heterogeneous contingent element that strongly decides the structure, the grammar of its necessity. This stance also implies that we could have simply decided otherwise and that this decision is directly in our power. But I think contingency is not in our power by definition, otherwise it wouldn't be contingency. And ignoring this like refusing to think of this kind of watered down liberal version of freedom, where freedom is understood as simply freedom to choose, for instance, between different also sexual identities, freedom to simply create ourselves and so on. It's really bullshit.
