The Old English Letter Ash

With the advent of middle english in the mid eleventh century, the letter ash fell out of usage. In some words, ashe gave way to the letter a and depending on the dialect, the words england and English were sometimes spelled with ash. The word for either was a water, spelled a h, wyn, ash, thorn, e, r. To day these words are just spelled with the letter a. Ash may be a lost letter in the english alphabet to day, but it still lives on in a handful of other modern alphabets such as norwegian or danish.
