The Relationship Between Jefferson and Sally Hemings

Thomas Jefferson fathered at least six of Sally Hemings' children after his wife's death. Sally Hemings worked for two and a half years from 1787 to 1789 in Paris as a domestic servant, maid. While in Paris, where she was free, she negotiated with Jefferson a return to enslavement in Monticello. Decades later, Jefferson freed all of Hemings' kids; Beverly and Harriet left Monticello in the early 1820s.
