Prior to the marginal revolution, economists viewed value in terms of effort or labor. Menger and others argued that value was not objective but dependent on other individuals' views. Subjectivism is a hallmark of the Austrian school; it's what they were all about. The debate over whether people can make economic decisions without price system began with Mises & Hayek.
