The group were getting absolutely panned in the reviews. Michael Clark and Roger McGwin also came down with Broncitis. And then, just to rub salt in the wound, Sonny and Cher turned up in the UK. The birds' version of all I really want to do massively outsold theirs in the UK but that big hit became omnipresent. It was thanks to the birds attending a party that two things happened to influence the Beatles songwriting. Peter Fonda kept insisting on telling people that he knew what it was like to actually be dead - this did not go down well with John Lennon and George Harrison who were on acid at the time.
